Robert Schumann’s Carnaval , Op. 9, stands as one of the most iconic Romantic piano compositions, celebrated for its imaginative and witty spirit. In addition to its “melodic invention and conciseness” praised by Franz Liszt, Carnaval playfully conceals its essence ‘behind the masks’ of various characters, including figures from traditional Italian theatre, Schumann’s close friends, and his enigmatic alter-egos, in this grand musical masquerade.
Celebrating the composition’s 190th anniversary, we invite you to explore Schumann’s exciting life and imagination by deciphering the secrets behind the composition, led by the subtitle “Scènes mignonnes sur quatre notes” (“short scenes on four notes”), together with one of Thailand’s most sought-after classical musicians, Dr. Akkra Yeunyonghattaporn.
